Can You Whiten Porcelain Crowns?

When your smile has lost its radiance to the daily wear and tear of chewing, grinding and stains, yet you want to save your pearly whites, your fix-all solution would be porcelain crowns. Among dental remedies, porcelain crowns might be the one procedure that saves as much of your teeth as possible.
Its usefulness is not limited to:

* Lightening teeth
* Filling gaps in teeth
* Fixing sticking out teeth
* Lessen crowding in the
* Restoration of superficial appearance of teeth

Placement of crowns is simple and usually requires two or three clinic visits, depending on your condition and dentist's preference. The process would include the preparation of the tooth or teeth, the making of the crown in a dental lab and the actual placement of your very own crowns. These crowns are durable. They are made of strong porcelain composites and mimic not only the color but the strength of your natural tooth. Just to be sure, be extra careful when eating hard food.

Even though bleaching doesn't work on this type of crowns this shouldn't be a problem. This is because staining is not a concern when you have porcelain crowns because these types of crowns are stain resistant. If you are not confident with the color of your teeth, it is best to have your teeth whitened before getting a porcelain crown. Your dentist will then simply match the color of the crowns to your newly whitened teeth. In case your teeth don't match your porcelains anymore after a few years because of staining of the surrounding teeth, you can simply have your teeth whitened to gain back the color that matches your crowns. Tooth whitening doesn't have a major effect on porcelain crowns and is not likely to damage it. But if whitening doesn't work on gaining your teeth's previous color, you have to get a new porcelain crown that matches the present color of your teeth.

As previously mentioned discoloration is not a problem with porcelain. This is because they are matched with the color of your natural teeth and they also perform just like your teeth would. When you have a porcelain crown in place it is expected to last five to fifteen years. With appropriate oral care like proper tooth brushing, flossing, regular visits to your dentists and refraining from chewing on hard food you can preserve the service life of your crowns to its maximum. Take care of your crowns like you do with your natural teeth and you will enjoy that radiant, perfect smile for years.
